Yesterday’s 9.1 magnitude earthquake and tsunami in Japan has created a major new crisis. Six nuclear reactors at several different locations have major damage from the earthquake that has damaged their cooling systems and created the potential for a meltdown comparable to the 1986 Chernobyl meltdown. The 40 year old Fukishima 1 reactor has partially melted down and exploded earlier today. So far, this is at least as bad as the 1979 Three Mile Island event. The Israeli Haaretz newspaper is warning that the situation in Japan could be worse than Chernobyl:
Hebrew University Professor Menachem Luria, an expert on air quality and poisoning, told Channel 2 on Saturday: “This is very worrying. There is no doubt that we have not seen anything like this in years, perhaps ever since nuclear experiments were conducted in the atmosphere in the 1950s. From what we can gather, this disaster is even more dangerous than Chernobyl, both from the standpoint of the population’s exposure to radioactive material and the spread of radioactive contamination in the area.”
There is a very high chance that one or more of the six reactors will melt down. Every previous nuclear power plant disaster was caused by operator errors. This is the first time that a nuclear power plant was tested by a magnitude 9 earthquake AND damage from a tsunami. Here the operators are doing everything by the book but are dealing with massive damage. If one or more of these meltdown, we can expect radiation to reach parts of Alaska and the West Coast of the U.S. in as little as three days. Our best case fallout scenario is one where we are mostly concerned about alpha and beta particle contamination and contamination of milk, vegetables, and fruits. Our worst case scenario is 1500+ RADs of gamma fallout in parts of Alaska and the West Coast with lower levels reaching further east.
I would strongly recommend that everyone get a minimum 10 day supply of pottassium iodide (KI) for everyone in their family, particularly for your children. Japanese authorities have already started distributing KI to their population. Although the United States does stockpile some KI, our stockpiles are inadequate.
GET IT NOW. DO NOT DELAY. I EXPECT ALL KI TO BE SOLD OUT NATIONWIDE BY MONDAY OR TUESDAY AT LATEST. POSSIBLY EARLIER IF ONE OF THE SIX REACTORS GOES INTO COMPLETE MELTDOWN (FUKU 1 IS IN PARTIAL MELTDOWN, #3 COOLING HAS FAILED). FULL MELTDOWN VERY POSSIBLE IN NEXT 24-48 HOURS.
The best source for KI is Shane at KI4U
http://www.ki4u.com/ - he had 6.3 million doses in his warehouse as of yesterday morning but he has been getting large numbers of orders today. Emergency Essentials is already out of stock. Nukepills is the other large supplier likely to have inventory.
I would also recommend that everyone check their inventory of instant powdered milk and regular powdered milk. This event has the potential to contaminate a large percentage of U.S. milk, particularly for those west of the Mississippi River. There is already panic buying of storage food. The probable rice crop failure in a large part of Japan and massive surge demand for powdered milk will make the storage food situation worse. Get your food supplies ordered ASAP. Shelf Reliance currently has the fastest delivery times (one to two weeks) in the industry.
